Decorative rock is usually laid a few inches deep, enough to cover the ground and keep weeds down without sinking into the soil. The right depth depends on the size of the rock and the area. We recommend a depth when we plan the job.

Weed fabric helps slow weeds, but it does not stop them. Weeds still grow in the dust and debris that collect on top.For weeds that do grow, see our weed control page.

River rock is smooth, rounded and usually larger. Decorative gravel is crushed rock with angular edges and is usually smaller.Gravel packs down firmly, which suits paths and open areas. River rock suits borders, accents and dry creek beds.

It can. Rock itself needs no watering, and plants in the beds can use drip irrigation.See our landscaping page for the full yard, and our irrigation installation & repair page for the watering side.

A small bed can be done quickly, while a whole-yard makeover takes longer. We give you a timeline after we see the space and agree on the rock.
